Athla Velocity App Reviews

waste

wasted my money

Do not buy

This app doesnt work. It doesnt truly track speed and gives a random speed

Doesnt work

I have the free and paid one. Both do not work. Its not reading or producing any results.

Picked up 101 mph serve!

At team practice I set up my iphone 5 on the side of the court and game linked it with my iPad 2 in the basket next to me. We hit ball after ball and the app picked up almost every single serve. It read anywhere from 60-101 mph depending on who hit. After ten minutes we had practically the whole team involved either competing or calling out speeds. It was awesome and the competition was fierce! Super easy and fast set up. Loved being able to tweak my serve and know it made a difference. Great app. Totally worth it. Cant wait to see what I hit next time!!

Really Bad

Even though this app is free it is truly a waste off time, I was seeing if I could measure the speed of a soccer ball, but I could not do anything

DO NOT GET IT!!!!

It does not even work it will not track any speeds and it keeps getting stuck. Also it keeps crashing its a horrible app.

Horrendous, awful, bad , etc

How on earth do u work this.....Either I dont know what to do or it is awful, probably awful

Very limited and difficult to use

For baseball, you cant use during a game since you need to be on the field. Must hold phone absolutely still to use. Was not accurate for me.

Now working on iPhone 6

Forgot to post last time. The last update before this one, fixed the app. I got no reading before and now it works! I accurately got my sons speed in a bullpen. One recommendation is add something to help with setup angle. That took the most adjustments to get right.

Great app! Easy and accurate.

My friend set it up at Golden Gate Park with the Varsity Boys Gateway High School Baseball team. They threw pitches for over half an hour and it picked up virtually every one. Ten kids lined up to test their throws and then kept getting back in line. Most kids threw in the 50s. The pitcher threw as high as 69mph. Even a girl from the stands came down and threw in the 40s. Then one kid on the team, who wasnt even a pitcher, threw a 78 mph ball. The kids gasped and thought it was a mistake - but then he threw them again and again. He had no idea he had such a great arm. The pitcher said, "you should try out! We need more pitchers!" The team was second in the league at the time. It makes you wonder how many other kids out there have hidden talent and dont even realize it! Not sure why the other reviewer had a problem. Just be sure no one moves during the pitch if they are standing in view of the device. At 10x cheaper than the least expensive radar out there - this is a great app!

Unsuccessful

Tried to use the app in our backyard. We followed the instructions to a T and never got one reading on the radar. It kept reading too much motion, even when it was on the ground like it said in the instructions.

App

App is very cool could you add lacrosse please.

Awesome!!!

My previous review still is true for the new version. I used this app at my sons group tennis lesson. It was a huge hit!! We were able to set it up with no trouble and even used the game link to yell out scores to students. Within five minutes of setting up I had ten teenagers in line waiting for their turn! Many of them clocked in at well over 80 mph, one even made it to 101 mph. Wondering if the other reviewer didnt have the angle set properly. The app read the speed as fast as we could hit the ball and students all commented that the readings were very similar to what theyve had before. I wish I had this when I was growing up! Every time I use it there is a crowd of people wanting to try it. You just have to make sure you set it in the right place and then you will be hooked! After one private lesson with this app my sons personal best improved! Thank you Athla!

Great App!

The app can indeed detect fast serves. I got several that were over 80 mph. One key is that it requires bright outdoor sunlight to work properly. Short of a $2000 radar gun, this is the best app for checking on and improving your tennis serve speed. Great, ingenious app!

Wow

This app is awesome. It just took a while to set up the location of the phone but after that, it worked so well. This is so much more affordable than a real radar gun and in has the same accuracy.

Waste of Money

Couldnt get this thing to work AT ALL. Paid $8 for baseball, nothing. No matter where I placed my phone, no matter how it positioned, never got one single reading -- always an error about too much motion. Funny that there is a video on the companys website that shows the primary camera being used, yet the app only uses the front camera. And there is ZERO visibility to where you are pointing the phone because there is no picture displayed back, only the black screen ready to display speed - yet but the blinking red dot saying "too much motion" I cant believe the total lack of anything useful. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MESS.

Amazing

At first I wouldnt get a reading. I emailed athla and they got back to me in a flash. Finally worked very satisfied. Worth the money.

For the red light issues

For anyone who has issues with the red light (most complaints are about this this), you cant hold this in your hand. You MUST set it down. Lean it up against your water battle. I have NEVER had a Red Light issue when it was on the ground. Nobody has steady enough hands to hold their iphone or ipad still enough to make it work. Dont make it harder on yourself. Set it down, walk away and let it do its job

Picky

Have a tough time using this outdoors if theres any type of breeze blowing. The app tells me that theres too much motion going on so wont take a reading. If the phone is moving at all then you will not be able to get a reading. So its not that often that I can go out on the field and bot have some type of breeze that will disrupt the phone. Its very hard to read the screen on the iPhone after a ball goes by. The brightness of the readout numbers between the background is not very good. The best thing to do is link between two smart phones so you can have the reading in your hand as seen the ads instead of trying to read the one thats on the ground.

Free Version Max 35 mph

I downloaded the free version to give it a try. The max my daughter hit was 35. She has been clocked at 43-48 with a radar gun. Now I know that they say the max for the free is 40 mph. My expecations was to see the app do whatever it does when the speed is ABOVE the max(aka say "over Max", "Be blank" or just read the max number "40"). I got a few questions into their support to see why the free was only hitting 35 when my daughter has hit 45 mph. It could be explained, so I am not going to give this a bad review, but wont give it a great reveiw until I hear back from them . It definately does detect the ball speed. Her change up was slower than her fast ball. I threw some slow ones and it read 22mph. I just dont know how accurate it is. It could be a good tool just to say "You are faster than that person" or "Your change up is X mph slower than your fast ball". SO 3 stars it is. Until I hear back from them. UPDATE: I heard back from the company, within a few hours. If you dont send a friend request/email, the max speed for free app is 35. It goes up to 40 after friend request. When the speed is higher, it says "Greater than 40", but displays 40. It is enough to for me to buy the full version.
